Password Protect PDF through Encryption

  • Open the PDF you wish to protect in Adobe Acrobat
  • Click on the Protect option. The icon that looks like a shield 🛡.

  • In the "Advanced Options" select "Encrypt with Password"
  • Note: You will be prompted to change the security on this document. Select YES

  • Select the options:
    • "Require a password to open the document
      • Password must be longer than 6 characters
      • It is a good practice to use one capital letter, one number and a special character ie. Test1!
    • Optional, but recommended. Is to select "Restrict editing and printing of document"
    • Leave the Options to the default state. "Compatibility" Acrobat X and later and "Encrypt all document contents"

  • If the option to restrict editing and printing is selected, the following applies:
    • A second 6 character password must be inputted
    • This must be different from the first "Document Open Password"
  • Note: After going through these steps, you will be immediately prompted to enter the initial "Document Open Password"
  • If the option to restrict editing and printing is selected it will also prompt for the second "Permissions" password immediately after inputting the "Document Open Password"
  • You must save the PDF changes for the encryption to apply
