- Login to Canvas and select the course that is ready for grading.
- Select Submit Grades from that course menu
When you first click on it, if you do not have a grading scheme set for your class, you will be prompted to do that first.
To do this, go into your course settings, enable the course grading schema, and click Update Course Details.
Once this is done, click again on Submit Grades from the course menu, and you will see the LTI start to load:
If You Do Not Have Assignments Built in Canvas
What it looks like if you do not have assignments built in Canvas for your course:
You can then select the grades from the drop-down menu to the right of the student, enter last date of attendance for F grades, then hit Submit Grades to submit.
If You Have Assignments Built in Canvas
Then you will see a roster with the Canvas calculated grade as a column, next to the grade column you are going to submit. Note that the Canvas grade column has a percentage wheel next to each grade. This percentage represents the % of assignments graded. So, if you had not finished your grading, you would see a percentage less than 100%, and you will also notice the “Grade to be Submitted” is less than the Canvas grade reflected, because it is factoring in those missing assignments in the final grade. To align your Canvas and Submit Grades column, please be sure all your published assignments are graded for your students, and that no blank values are in the gradebook. Otherwise, you will need to manually select the drop-down and change the grades as desired in the “Grade to be Submitted” column. (See image below for a visual of all of this)
Submitting the Grades
To submit the grades, press the Submit Grades button. It will give you the count of grades ready to submit. You can submit grades in batches if desired, they do not all need to be done at once.
Once you hit submit, you will see a wheel spin next to each student record you have a pending grade for.
Once completed, they will all instead reflect a green check mark.
And, as we can see, they immediately also showed up in WebSTAR and Banner:
And that is it! You submitted your grades using Canvas!
Submit Final Grades Legend
You will notice two blue buttons in the top corner. These are references for you, helping you understand the steps needed to submit your grades, and how Pass/No Pass is handled between Canvas and Banner (see the Grade Key).
Last Date of Attendance for Failing Grades
Grades where you have an F reflected will prompt you to enter a last date of attendance. It will give you the Canvas calculated date (based on the login activity of the student), so you can use that if desired, or base it off of your own class policies reflected in your syllabus.
Grades Already Rolled to Banner (Ws)
If you have any grades already rolled (posted to the student record), those will be reflected at the bottom of your screen. These tend to be W grades. This is an FYI only, no action needed.
Ungradable Records
If you have any ungradable students, they will reflect at the bottom of your screen. Do not be alarmed, this tends to be you (as the instructor), and any waitlisted students. This is expected, as waitlisted records are not to be graded. This again is an FYI, no action required.
Grade Resubmission
Now you will notice that there is a column for “current Banner grade (if set)”. So yes, you can submit your grades repeatedly, just like WebSTAR! If you have already submitted them, you will see them reflected here, and you can select a different grade using the tool and submit again to override it. Note, just like WebSTAR, this will only be allowed until grades are rolled by the Admissions Office.
Troubleshooting
If your roster does not load from Banner, you will get the following message:
Note that this integration runs on AWS, which has a 30 second time out lock. So, if your roster is large (over 100 students), or there is heavy traffic, there is a risk it will time out at peak usage times. If this happens, try again in a few minutes. If the problem persists, open a ticket with IT, and we will be happy to assist.
And that is it! I hope you all enjoy this new grading feature!
